EarthScope is Watching Tectonic Plates Slowly Slip
Can tectonic plates slip without causing an earthquake?
In 2002, researchers discovered that sections of the tectonic plates in the Pacific Northwest are gently slipping a few centimeters every 10 to 20 months. Episodic Tremor and Slip (as researchers dubbed the phenomenon) can release the same amount of energy as a magnitude 7.0 earthquake. Since the energy releases over several weeks, no one feels the quivering of plates slipping past each other.
