Sometimes the signal from a GPS satellite bounces off the ground before reaching a GPS receiver on the Earth. This extra bounce contributes a small error to the accurate position location. Now researchers have discovered that this extra information from the bouncing signals contains information about what they bounced off, such as: snow depth, vegetation height, and the amount of water in the soil. This is a great example of using information that is usually discarded to develop a new scientific technique.
