Understanding Liquefaction : Solid Ground Turns Liquid
Liquefaction results when sandy soil, saturated with water, temporarily loses its strength due to the buildup of water pressure in the spaces between the sand grains as seismic waves pass through the soil during an earthquake. If the water pressure increases to the point that it equals the weight of the overlying soil, the soil liquefies and behaves like a fluid.
