The earthquake was only 7 km (4 miles) deep, which means the earthquake waves
were still strong enough to cause a lot of shaking when they reached the
surface in the town of Wells. The destructiveness of an earthquake does not
only depend on its magnitude. Building styles and quality of construction
are important factors contributing to the amount of damage that results from
a given magnitude earthquake.
