In this figure orange, red and purple colors indicate an area is being stretched
the most, and blue colors mean an area is being stretched the least. You
are probably familiar with diagrams where the color red means hot and blue
means cold. Because the ground is not actually red or blue, scientists can
choose any colors they like to illustrate their research graphs.
