2011 Japan Earthquake
This USArray wave visualization shows the actual seismic data collected during the March 11, 2011 magnitude 8.9 earthquake in Honshu, Japan. Even though this earthquake occurred on the other side of the Earth, data collected during the earthquake by USArray seismometers was used to map the motion of the plate boundaries near Japan.
The station circle changes color depending on whether the seismometer is moving up or down. Blue is up, red is down. The more intense the color, the larger the motion.
