Multiple Stations - 3D
This animation attempts to tell the whole story, highlighting the travel of seismic waves from the time of the earthquake until they arrive in the United States and are recorded by the USArray.
This visualization opens with a view of the globe focused on the origin of the earthquake. The propagation of the "P" or "primary" wave is indicated by a green circle. The "S" or "secondary" wave is indicated by the red circle. And the surface waves are indicated by the yellow circle. The waves travel out in every direction from the earthquake (as the circles show). This is notable as the first energy to arrive at the USArray are the waves that follow the shortest path. However, the waves also reach the array by traveling the long way around the planet - thus later in the animation one sees the surfaces waves arriving from the opposite direction as the original waves (and the yellow surface wave indicator circle shows this).
