Seismic waves
Waves of energy that travel through the Earth as a result of an earthquake. Earthquakes create various types of waves with different velocities. When recorded with a seismometer, their different arrival times enables the origin of the earthquake to be determined. The refraction or reflection of seismic waves traveling through the Earth is used to explore the Earth's interior.
