When a tsunami event occurs, the first information available about the source of the tsunami is based only on the seismic information for the earthquake. As the wave propagates across the ocean, a system of buoys and sea floor pressure sensors provide information about sea level heights to the tsunami warning centers. This information is used to accurately forecast if and where tsunami watches, advisories or warnings should be issued.
