Alaska is complicated
Alaska tectonics are among some of the most dramatic and active on Earth. Tectonics are responsible for Alaska's spectacular topography, crustal deformation, and high rates of volcanism and earthquakes. Three of the four highest mountain ranges in North America are in Alaska: the Alaska Range, Chugach-St. Elias Mountains, and the Wrangell Mountains. Alaska has convergent and transform boundaries.
Earthquakes occur where tectonic plates interact or are deforming.
Why are there so many earthquakes that aren't at plate boundaries?
