This is an image of what is going on 200 km beneath the surface of the Earth in the mantle, which is a layer of the Earth made up of very hot rock under enormous pressure. Blue colors mean relatively colder rock, and red colors mean relatively warmer rock. The Basin and Range Province is hotter than the surrounding regions at upper mantle depths.
EarthScope is providing high resolution views of the Basin and Range Province using seismic tomography.
