2011 Virginia Earthquake
This USArray wave visualization shows the actual seismic data collected during the August 23, 2011 magnitude 5.8 Mineral Virginia earthquake. This earthquake occurred on a known fault system in Virginia, but it did occur sooner than the expected average time between earthquakes on these faults.
As the USArray moves into the eastern United States, data with a higher resolution than ever recorded will allow fault systems to be mapped in unprecedented detail.
The station circle changes color depending on whether the seismometer is moving up or down. Blue is up, red is down. The more intense the color, the larger the motion.
