Hernando de Soto Bridge
The Hernando de Soto bridge carries Interstate 40 across the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee. The bridge sits on ground that may experience liquefaction during a major earthquake. Due to the proximity of the New Madrid seismic zone, the bridge is being seismically retrofitted. Bearing isolation systems are being installed to limit shaking. New piers are being sunk deeper into material less susceptible to liquefaction.
