Niigata, Japan earthquake
The 1964 Niigata earthquake, together with the 1964 Alaska earthquake, brought liquefaction phenomena and their devastating effects to the attention of engineers and seismologists. A remarkable building failure occurred near the Shinano riverbank where the Kawagishi-cho apartment buildings tipped over due to liquefaction of the underlaying soil. Despite the extreme tilting, the buildings suffered little structural damage.
