A sand dike is a sediment filled crack through which water and sand flowed. A sand sill is a lens shaped layer of sand, 1 to 2 meters in thickness, that has been injected between existing ground layers or below an impermeable clay layer. Paleoseismology uses these liquefaction features to learn about and date prehistoric earthquakes.
