A hotspot is a stationary heat plume in the Earth’s mantle. The heat plume causes rock to melt into magma in the lithosphere (the crust and upper mantle). This magma can rise to the surface, erupt as lava, and build up mountains. The motion of the tectonic plate above the hotspot carries mountains away from the hotspot. This process repeats, creating a linear series of mountains.
