Did the Mississippi River flow backwards after the 1811-1812 earthquakes?
The 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes caused uplifting that disrupted the normal flow of the Mississippi River. The river’s current did flow backward for a short time (several hours), but quickly returned to the normal flow direction. The uplifted land caused several sets of rapids that were quickly washed away over several days.
