A specially equipped tugboat sends pulses of sound straight down into the layered sediments beneath the riverbed. It takes just over one second for the sound waves to travel down through the sediments to ancient rocks below and bounce back to the underwater microphones.
In these sediments, one mile of depth equals approximately 550 million years of sediments.
