Recording the Tsunami Trigger Quake

The globe below shows seismic stations that recorded the magnitude 9.0 earthquake that triggered the
December 26, 2004 tsunami.

In order to tell one seismic station from another, scientists give each station an acronym, or coded letter name, such as:

  • COLA - College, Alaska
  • LSZ - Lusaka, Zambia
  • OTAV - Otavalu, Eduador

Can you guess where these
          stations are?

Learn more about how the stations recorded the magnitude 9.0 earthquake on the next two pages.
