IRIS DMC Webmaster, 2013-08-08

In 2012 IRIS DMC web services have emerged as the forerunner in the way users programmatically access seismic data and metadata. In order to keep up with the demand and to continue to bring the community new and better features, the web service developers have provided the following new capabilities since the start of the year.

New services

  • ws-traveltime
    • provides travel time information calculated using the TauP Tookit for specified distances (or coordinate pairs) and an event depth
  • ws-virtualnetwork
    • returns information for stations belonging to virtual networks

Improved services

  • ws-event
    • support for ANF phase arrivals
    • support for radius selections at the poles
    • preferred origin and magnitude filters
  • ws-station
    • update of StationXML specification
    • support of a simple text output format
  • ws-bulkdataselect, ws-timeseries, ws-dataselect
    • support for microsecond time resolution
    • improved support for real-time data caching
    • new filters and support for polynomial instrument response correction (ws-timeseries)

As a matter of course, the DMC’s Java Web Service Library and command-line Fetch scripts have been updated to support these new features when appropriate. You can find more information and the latest version on web service clients at:

More service updates and improvements are planned for later this year. To stay up to date on these developments, users are encouraged to sign up for the ‘webservices’ mailing list:
