3D checkerboard resolution test (checker dimensions: radii of 3° and 1°)

3D checkerboard resolution test with noise contamination.
3D checkerboard resolution test with noise contamination. The horizontal slices of S velocity perturbations with radii of (a) 3° and (b) 1° in the true models (top panels) and joint inversion results at various depths are presented. Regions not covered by combined data sets are illustrated in gray.

Resolution tests for the performances of stand-alone inversions and joint inversion

Cross-section maps encompassing the western Mediterranean Sea and the Hindu Kush
Cross-section maps encompassing the western Mediterranean Sea and the Hindu Kush. Discontinuities at 410 and 660 km depths are indicated in gray lines. The cross-section maps of S-velocity perturbations in (a) the BSES model as the true model, and inversion results with contaminated synthetic data of (b) waveform fits, (c) group velocities, (d) teleseismic arrival times, and (e) the combined data sets are presented. Regions not covered by data sets are illustrated in gray. These tests show that the joint inversion has a better resolution for the whole mantle than stand-alone inversions.
