Frequently Answered Question

Question

Source catalog of Wilber 3

What source catalog is used in IRIS Wilber 3?

Answer

Wilber uses the IRIS fdsnws-event service (http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/event/1) which preferentially returns data from ISC, but since the ISC catalog doesn’t include recent events, it will return data from the NEIC (USGS) catalog for those.

The meaning of “recent” here can vary, depending on the publishing schedule for the ISC catalog, but it’s usually about 18 months.

If you choose the “Custom Query” option in Wilber, you can select a particular catalog to use. Be aware, though, the reason the catalogs are combined is that none of them is individually complete, so you are likely to see large gaps in the data.
