We are trying to get away from oil damping of the AS-1 instruments and have
developed a magnetic damping alternative. A batch of magnetic dampers has
been purchased for the next workshop and there are some extra dampers
available
for teachers who would like to make the switch away from oil. The
design, which was
developed by Chris Chapman, is described here:
http://jclahr.com/science/psn/chapman/as1%20damping/index.html

One of the negative consequences of oil is the difficulty of moving
the instrument.
The oil tends to drip or spill and, especially with the addition of
STP, is very
hard to clean up. In terms of seismograph operation, another
disadvantage is that
oil damping is much more temperature dependent than magnetic damping.

Please let me know if you would like to have one of the extra
dampers. I'll keep
track of the responses and IRIS will probably order a larger batch next time.

Include your physical address and phone number so that I can ship the damper
via FedEx.

Cheers,
John
