The IRIS DMC is looking for an experienced Java Web Services Engineer.

You are a seasoned Java developer experienced in web service and application development. You are self-motivated with strong time management skills. You enjoy puzzling through various use cases to determine the best general solutions then implement them. You work well with others in a small development team and can also develop a complete project on your own. You work well with a wide range of end-users as needed.

We are a small, scientific consortium with a global reach. The work we perform and the services we provide have a direct impact on the field of seismology and earthquake research. Increasingly, our impact is broadening to related geoscience fields through collaborations.

Summary of responsibilities:

Responsibilities include creating new and extending existing web service interfaces that provide access to data and resources at our data center. Additionally, you would be responsible for maintaining and enhancing an existing data product management system.

Responsibilities:

* Design, implement and enhance various web services and data access mechanisms (http://service.iris.edu).
* Extend and maintain our data product manangment system (http://www.iris.edu/spud), including the web services interfaces and interactive web interface.
* Collaborate with the data product development group (internal with external collaborators) on product generation and presentation to scientists and other users.
* Collaborate with partner data centers in seismology and other geosciences on data access mechanisms.
* Help determine solutions and appropriate technologies to fit our data center’s strategic directions.
* Fully document technical details of systems developed.
* Fully utilize issue tracking and documentation systems.

You will take full ownership of multiple projects. You will be expected to create software from scratch, talk directly with stakeholders and work with external collaborators.

Experience& Skills:
* 4+ years of Java experience, with strong web service development skills and knowledge.
* RESTful service development experience in the Jersey/JAX-RS framework.
* Development experience in Javascript, AJAX, jQuery and PrimeFaces.
* Development experience with JPA and SQL databases (e.g. Postgres, Oracle).
* Experience with using the Eclipse IDE.
* Ability to work at the Unix command line level.
* Experience with Tomcat, Glassfish and other web app containers would be useful.
* Experience with geophysical or scientific data is a plus.
* Experience with a range of programming languages is a plus; in particular C, fortran,& Python.

The minimum level of education and experience for this position is a Bachelors degree in Computer Science/IT, a Master’s degree would be preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
