At the University of Vienna (15 faculties, 4 centres, about 188 fields of study, approx. 9.400 members of staff, more than 90.000 students) a
Seismologist Position
at the Department of Meteorology and Geophysics
University of Vienna

is to be filled. The Section of Geophysics is looking for a candidate who either has a geophysics PhD focusing on seismology, and/or extended technical expertise in that field. We are looking for a highly motivated and creative colleague.

The project:
This position becomes available in the project AlpArray Austria, funded by the Austrian Science Foundation FWF. In this project, the Austrian territory will be instrumented by broadband seismometers (“backbone”). A role of the candidate will be to intervene in and oversee the field work, and to assure the data flow. He/she should also contribute strongly to the science that is to be done with the data. The AlpArray Austria backbone will later be extended by other countries to form the AlpArray, covering the entire Alpine region.

For a scientist, we require an active participation in data analysis and research in seismology (and solid earth geophysics). We`re particularly interested in developing new techniques of subsurface imaging for addressing fundamental questions of basic research. Your research interest would ideally embed itself naturally within the AlpArray Austria project. Potential topics are seismicity, waveform inversion, ambient noise, seismic anisotropy, tomography, etc. For a more technically interested person, we require advanced knowledge dealing with seismological data and stations.

Profile:
Doctoral degree and/or extended technical experience in seismology. Advanced computer and programming knowledge. Ability to work in a group is a requirement, as well as excellent knowledge of English language. Knowledge of German language is an advantage. In exceptional circumstances, a candidate with a particularly strong technical expertise but no PhD can also be accepted.

The position:
Duration of employment: 3 years.
Begin time: 1.1.2015 or earlier.
The salary of this full-time position will be 3.483,40 €, paid 14 times a year, with full social benefits.

Please send your application until 23 May 2014, when the screening will begin.
Your application (in English) should contain CV, list of publications, your research interests, your motivation letter, as well as names and addresses of three potential referees, who are willing to send letters of recommendation.
Please send your application by email to Goetz.Bokelmann<at>univie.ac.at , and
specify the identification number AAA12 in the subject line.

You may also contact Götz Bokelmann for further information.
