Research Associate Position in Solid Earth Geophysics

Earth imaging: Joint inversion of multiple geophysical datasets

We are seeking a three year full time post-doctoral research fellow to work in the area of joint inversion of multiple geophysical datasets with the aim of imaging the Earth’s lithosphere in 3-D. Depending on the candidate, this could range from combining various seismic datasets (e.g. reflection, refraction, local earthquake, teleseismic, ambient noise surface wave etc.) in a single inversion, to full thermochemical tomography, in which temperature, pressure and composition are directly retrieved from a variety of datasets e.g. surface wave dispersion, body wave arrival times, gravity anomalies, elevation, heat flow etc. Possible areas of application include eastern Australia and Tibet, for which large repositories of geophysical data exist. Applicants should have experience in geophysical inversion and the processing of large and varied datasets. A background that includes cluster computing, method development and programming is desirable.
