Dear colleagues,
We would like to draw your attention to a ongong competition on aftershock detection of the 2008 Ms8.0 Wenchuan earthquake, co-organized by the Institute of Geophysics, China Earthquake Administration (IGPCEA, http://www.cea-igp.ac.cn/en/), and Alibaba Cloud, the largest cloud computing company in China (https://intl.aliyun.com/).
The purpose of this competition is to invite different professional fields to detect aftershocks of the devastating Wenchuan earthquake from continuous seismic waveforms. Automatic picking of aftershocks is the primary target, and the association and location are optional bonus points. This activity encourages participants to team up and apply start-of-the-art tools from digital signal processing, time series analysis, data mining, machine learning, deep learning, among others.
The Data Management Centre of the China National Seismic Network at CEA-IGP provides three-component broadband waveform recorded by 16 permanent seismic stations surrounding the aftershock area. Data format is the standard binary SAC with 100 Hz sampling frequency. The total amount of the waveform data reaches 240 GB, beginning one month before the mainshock and ending four months after the mainshock. The continuous waveforms can be downloaded freely after registering on Tianchi, a data-mining platform by Alibaba Cloud.
The total amount of the reward is 350,000 RMB (about US $51,000). The deadline of the registration is 11:59 p.m. on July 27, 2017 (Beijing Time). Scientists in China and around the world are encouraged to participate in this competition.
