Dr. Patricia Martínez-Garzón
2017-11-14 09:34:39
Institution: Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences
Open Until: 2017-12-15

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. With approx. 1280 employees, the GFZ is conducting interdisciplinary research on the "System Earth" and the influence of humans on the planet. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, it is part of Germany's largest science organization.

Within the framework of the Helmholtz Young Investigators Group "SAIDAN: Seismic and Aseismic Deformation in the brittle crust: Implications for Anthropogenic and Natural Hazard" (www.saidan.org) hosted by Section 4.2 "Geomechanics and Rheology" we invite applications for a

PhD Student (m/f)
Reference No. 73/42/17 D

The SAIDAN Young Investigators Group aims at: (1) generating a throughout quantitative understanding on deformation processes extending from fully seismic to completely aseismic movements in the brittle Earth's crust, and (2) characterizing precursory processes preceding the occurrence of large earthquakes in relation to both plate-bounding transform faults and reservoir engineering activities.

The members of SAIDAN (P.I. Dr. Patricia Martínez-Garzón) will benefit from scientific interaction with the main collaboration partners (CALTECH, University of Southern California, University of Bochum).

In addition, the GFZ is a partner with Geo.X (www.geo-x.net), and as such it is well connected with other geoscience institutions in Potsdam und Berlin. Geo.X forms the largest regional cluster of geoscientific expertise in Europe and offers excellent opportunities for cooperation and development.

Your tasks:
• study of seismic deformation processes and earthquake nucleation focusing on fluid-induced seismicity environments and major plate bounding transform faults
• willingness to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment
• publish research results in state of the art journals

Your qualifications:
• Master's degree (or equivalent) in Geophysics with a focus on either seismology, seismo-mechanics or geodesy
• knowledge and motivation to develop research on earthquake nucleation and physics
• computer programming skills are valuable
