Research Associate in Earthquake Seismology (Fixed Term)
Department of Earth Sciences - Bullard Labs
University of Cambridge

We are looking to appoint a postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) in
earthquake seismology at the University of Cambridge for a period of 18
months in order to support the Newton Institutional Links project
"Earthquake hazard mitigation in Sulawesi and Kalimantan". The PDRA will
be required to travel to Indonesia on multiple occasions in order to
build collaborative links with partners at ITB (Institute of Technology,
Bandung), and oversee the deployment of an array of broadband
seismometers in Kalimantan and Sulawesi. Other tasks include one or more
of (i) extraction of earthquake waveforms generated by local and
regional events from GDSN and IDSN stations; (ii) the inversion of body
wave data for earthquake source parameters and centroid depth; and (iii)
the inversion of local and regional earthquake traveltimes for
hypocenter location and seismic velocity structure. The overall goal of
the project is to provide new source and structural information to
improve current probabilistic seismic hazard models of the region.

The successful candidate must have either completed, or be in the
process of completing, a PhD in a relevant subject area such as
seismology or geophysics. We seek a candidate with experience in
earthquake seismology and/or Earth imaging, who also has practical
experience with the deployment of seismometers in the field. Good
written and oral communication skills and a respect for other cultures
is essential for liaising with partners in Indonesia, presenting results
at workshops and international meetings, and preparing papers for
submission to international journals.

There is some flexibility in the start date, but the candidate would
need to commence their position sometime between April 1 and September 1
2018.

Fixed term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months. As an
alternative, the candidate may choose to be funded part time for 2 years
at 0.75FTE. However, if this option is chosen, they must commence the
position by 1st May.
