NSF recently issued a Dear Colleague Letter (https://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf18061) describing plans to divest its ownership of the seismic ship R/V Langseth no later than mid-2020, and to stop accepting proposals for marine active source seismic work except in the case of partnerships with industry or other countries.

The IRIS Board of Directors is concerned about the implications of this decision for a large section of the seismology and marine geophysics communities. The IRIS Board has written a letter to NSF in response to the recent Dear Colleague Letter. You can access the letter at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/files/iris_news/docs/irisbod_response_dcl_ap2018_final.pdf
