response files attached to the data from IRIS. However, I did not
receive an answer yet, and so I wondered if you could maybe help me with
this. The problem is extensively explained in the email below, supported
by some attached files.

Dear Mr. Benson,

My name is Janneke de Laat and I am a PhD student in the group of Sergei
Lebedev at the Dublin Institute of Advanced studies. Currently I am
looking into the preprocessing of data obtained from IRIS through
BREQ_FAST request, including the response removal. And here is where I
encountered an issue I hope you could help me with.

The response file I was looking at is from the station BOSA, network GT,
channel BHE, location 00, year 2012. In our data base we have a response
file named "RESP.GT.BOSA.00.BHE" (file attached), downloaded in 2014
from IRIS via web services (http://ds.iris.edu/SeismiQuery/responses.htm).

However, when downloading the response file of the same station through
IRIS again, I obtain a different response file. I attached this response
file as "RESP_new.GT.BOSA.00.BHE". When comparing these files you can
see that the new response file has 10 stages, while the old one has only
5. More worrying is, however, that in the new file a delay correction is
applied in every stage, increasing to up to 0.626 s in the 10th stage.
On the contrary, in the old file there is zero delay correction applied,
although there is also a (slightly different) time delay observed.

I have applied both response files to remove the response from a certain
trace measured at this station. What I obtain is a small shift in time
between the two obtained traces. Attached is a plot of the original
trace, and the trace after response removal with the two different
response files ("bosa_raw_resp2x.png"). The red trace is processed with
the new response file, and is shifted in time with around 0.6s compared
to the black trace, which is processed with the old response file. This
shift seems to be comparable with the correction which is applied in the
new response file. However, I would expect this shift to be negative in
time, as the correction is applied to account for the estimated delay,
am I right? However, I observe a shift forward in time, which I do not
understand.

Additionally, I plotted the response files for both response files which
I also attached to this email ("resp_bosa_obspy_new" and
"resp_bosa_obspy_old", respectively). In the bottom-right plot you can
see the obtained trace after the response is removed. I zoomed in quite
far to see that with the new response file the trace is shifted forward
in time, around 0.6s, while with the old response file the trace remains
in phase, which is similar as observed in the output trace in figure
"bosa_raw_resp2x".

So to come to my questions:
- Is this observed shift in figure "bosa_raw_resp2x" indeed caused by
the difference in correction applied to the estimated delay as written
in the different response files?
- Did IRIS change these response files over time?
- Which of the two is the correct one to use?
- Are there more stations where the response files have been changed?

    It sounds like this was likely because of some change in the metadata. Currently there are three channel epochs for GT.BOSA.00.BHE. You can view this information at http://ds.iris.edu/mda/GT/BOSA/00/BHE.
    - Did IRIS change these response files over time?
    Yes the instrument response changed over time. The copy of the instrument response that you have was only valid from 2009-10-07 to 2014-05-29. Although there are sometimes good reasons to do so, it is usually suggested not to use local copies of metadata as they can change without notice.
    - Which of the two is the correct one to use?
    The correct instrument response depends on the channel epoch that you are looking at. Below are links the instrument response files for various date ranges. The instrument response normally changes when there is a change of equipment at the station, so it is important to use the correct one for a given time span.

    Yes, instrument responses normally change whenever a piece of equipment is swapped out.

    My name is Janneke de Laat and I am a PhD student in the group of Sergei
    Lebedev at the Dublin Institute of Advanced studies. Currently I am
    looking into the preprocessing of data obtained from IRIS through
    BREQ_FAST request, including the response removal. And here is where I
    encountered an issue I hope you could help me with.

    The response file I was looking at is from the station BOSA, network GT,
    channel BHE, location 00, year 2012. In our data base we have a response
    file named "RESP.GT.BOSA.00.BHE" (file attached), downloaded in 2014
    from IRIS via web services (http://ds.iris.edu/SeismiQuery/responses.htm).

    However, when downloading the response file of the same station through
    IRIS again, I obtain a different response file. I attached this response
    file as "RESP_new.GT.BOSA.00.BHE". When comparing these files you can
    see that the new response file has 10 stages, while the old one has only
    5. More worrying is, however, that in the new file a delay correction is
    applied in every stage, increasing to up to 0.626 s in the 10th stage.
    On the contrary, in the old file there is zero delay correction applied,
    although there is also a (slightly different) time delay observed.

    I have applied both response files to remove the response from a certain
    trace measured at this station. What I obtain is a small shift in time
    between the two obtained traces. Attached is a plot of the original
    trace, and the trace after response removal with the two different
    response files ("bosa_raw_resp2x.png"). The red trace is processed with
    the new response file, and is shifted in time with around 0.6s compared
    to the black trace, which is processed with the old response file. This
    shift seems to be comparable with the correction which is applied in the
    new response file. However, I would expect this shift to be negative in
    time, as the correction is applied to account for the estimated delay,
    am I right? However, I observe a shift forward in time, which I do not
    understand.

    Additionally, I plotted the response files for both response files which
    I also attached to this email ("resp_bosa_obspy_new" and
    "resp_bosa_obspy_old", respectively). In the bottom-right plot you can
    see the obtained trace after the response is removed. I zoomed in quite
    far to see that with the new response file the trace is shifted forward
    in time, around 0.6s, while with the old response file the trace remains
    in phase, which is similar as observed in the output trace in figure
    "bosa_raw_resp2x".

    So to come to my questions:
    - Is this observed shift in figure "bosa_raw_resp2x" indeed caused by
    the difference in correction applied to the estimated delay as written
    in the different response files?
    - Did IRIS change these response files over time?
    - Which of the two is the correct one to use?
    - Are there more stations where the response files have been changed?
