Postdoctoral Position in Seismology at the University of Calgary

In 2016, the University of Calgary was awarded $75 million, over seven years, from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) for its initiative entitled: “Global Research Initiative in Sustainable Low Carbon Unconventional Resources”. The goal of this research is to dramatically reduce the impact of energy extraction and energy use on the environment.

As part of the implementation of its GRI scientific strategy to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the University of Calgary is seeking a postdoctoral fellow (PDF) with expertise in seismology, geophysics, physics, mathematics, computer science, or related fields.

A central focus of the research associated with this position is developing passive seismic techniques to image shallow structure using a combination of ambient noise and other seismic sources recorded by dense arrays. A primary goal of this research is to characterize induced microseismicity and improve understanding of the response of reservoir formations to perturbations such as injecting CO2 at sequestration sites and developing geothermal resources. This is a joint project in collaboration with the University of Alberta.

The successful candidate will be expected to work within a team environment and have regular interactions with faculty, other postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students at the University of Calgary, so excellent communication skills are a must. Publication of peer-reviewed papers in high-impact scientific journals is an expectation of this position.

Qualifications:

• PhD in seismology or related field and strong analytical and computational skills
• Experience in the analysis of active-source seismic data and observational earthquake seismology is highly preferred

Postdoctoral position offers a stipend of $55,000 CAD/year for 2 years, plus benefits, travel and computer allowance, and operating budgets. Postdoctoral fellow will be expected to apply for major funding opportunities they are eligible for (e.g. NSERC, Killam, AITF, Banting).

Application details:

Applications should consist of a current CV, one-page statement of research experience and interests, contact information for three references, as well as your availability.

The position is available immediately and the search will continue until the team is assembled. Anticipated start dates range from late 2018 to early 2019.

In assembling the CFREF research teams, aggressive diversity and equity targets are in place and so applications from under-represented groups are especially encouraged .
To be eligible as a Postdoctoral scholar at the University of Calgary, the candidate must have been awarded a PhD or equivalent within the five (5) years immediately preceding the appointment.
