Hi, I can’t seem to find how to cite SAC in the on-line manual. Can anyone tell me the proper citation for SAC in a paper?

Thanks,

Derek

p.s. thanks SAC developers!

    Hi Derek-

I found a number of citations via Google that point to the published user's guide, which IRIS DMC also links to:

Helffrich, G., J. Wookey, and I. Bastow (2013), The Seismic Analysis Code: A Primer and User's Guide, Cambridge Univ. Press, Cambridge, U. K.

I don't think there is any citation for the software itself, and we do not currently have any official process at IRIS for citation of software in general.

A link to the publisher: https://www.cambridge.org/us/academic/subjects/earth-and-environmental-science/solid-earth-geophysics/seismic-analysis-code-primer-and-users-guide?format=PB&isbn=9781107613195

    Hi Derek,

If you are using the version of SAC that you received from the IRIS DMC I believe the correct references are listed on this page:

    https://seiscode.iris.washington.edu/projects/sac

    References:
Goldstein, P., A. Snoke, (2005), “SAC Availability for the IRIS Community”, Incorporated Institutions for Seismology Data Management Center Electronic Newsletter.

Goldstein, P., D. Dodge, M. Firpo, Lee Minner (2003) “SAC2000: Signal processing and analysis tools for seismologists and engineers, Invited contribution to “The IASPEI International Handbook of Earthquake and Engineering Seismology”, Edited by WHK Lee, H. Kanamori, P.C. Jennings, and C. Kisslinger, Academic Press, London.

    regards,
    Chad

As Derek was looking in the SAC manual, Chad gives the correct answer.  Rob's
references are for George Hellfrich's BRIS/SAC, which is not the same as
      IRIS/SAC (George's distinction).

Although no reference is given in the online manual, the first reference below
is given at the end of the README file in the top directory for the IRIS/SAC
distribution.  The second reference was written before SAC moved from LLNL to
      IRIS in 2005.

Another possible reference is the manual itself:
      http://ds.iris.edu/files/sac-manual/
