Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Janneke de Laat, PhD student in seismology at the Dublin
Institute for Advance Studies. At the moment I am trying to download the
data of the seismic network XD (1996-1998) for the "Seismic study of the
Iceland hotspot". Through obspy I downloaded the traces, however, if I
want to remove the response, I get the error "When no denominators are
given it must be a digital FIR filter.".
When I looked into the response files of the network (attached is the
response file for HOT01, channel LHZ) through Obspy, I found that the
Stage 2 Transfer function type was set to "B" ( = ANALOG (HERTZ)).
However, when I found the response files online (for HOT01 (LHZ):

), this same transfer function of Stage 2 was set to "Undefined".
To test this effect I manually changed this transfer function type of
stage 2 first to undefined, and then to "A" (= ANALOG (RADIANS)) and "D"
(=DIGITAL). As far as I know these are the different options for stage
2 transfer function type? The response removal only succeeded for the
last option, setting it to "D". This transfer function type is also
similar to the transfer function types of the following stages (all set
to "D"). Could it thus be that this is an error in the response file,
and the actual stage 2 transfer function type is "D"? If not, is there
maybe an other error in the file that prevents me from removing the
response from these stations?

anything back from you. I am have edited the response files as explained
below for the XD network, and the removal of the response file was
successful. Still I would like to have the confirmation that this was
indeed a mistake in the response files, or is there any other reason why
the response removal was unsuccessful with the original response file?
Additionally, I have been downloading lots of data globally, and I found
that the response files attached to the same stations, downloaded from
different networks seem to differ. Attached is an excel spreadsheet
which shows which response files are different downloaded through IRIS
and through other servers. It includes the time frame of the response
files of both servers, and given in blue are the time frames I believe
are correct, as they are more recent. Clearly from this file, the
response files given by IRIS are outdated for several stations. For my
own data I corrected these response files with the correct response
files, however, I think it is important that you update your response
files on IRIS online as well. I don't know if this is in your hands or
the responsibility of the networks, but I wanted to make you aware of
this issue as I believe it is important.

from removing the response from these stations?
