*Earthquakes, machine learning, real-time seismology and next-generation
seismic networks*

Postdoctoral fellow positions are available at the UC Berkeley Seismology
Lab to work on earthquake source problems. The group in particularly
interested in the application of machine learning in seismology, with a
focus on real-time seismology and the use of massive, diverse datasets
including the MyShake global smartphone seismic network.

MyShake is an effort to harness personal/private smartphones to detect and
study earthquake sources, while at the same time providing hazard reduction
strategies to the users in the form of earthquake alerts and education.
The MyShake network is expanding with a completely new version of the app
and a range of additional services coming spring 2019.

The postdoctoral fellow(s) would work on one or more problems in this
domain. These could include earthquake source studies ranging from
detection of small magnitude (M1.0) events beneath urban areas to imaging
of large magnitude ruptures. Also, real-time detection and characterization
of earthquakes including earthquake early warning, and rapid assessment of
earthquake impacts such as dense microzonation studies and building
response detection.

The initial appointment would be for one year. Reappointment for a second
and possibly third year is typical but dependent on satisfactory progress.
