Reminder: If you have’t filled out the “Community Input Form” (https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4717567/CORES-Community-Input) yet, please take a few minutes to do so. Your input could very well have a significant impact on the recommendations of the CORES committee.

Thanks,
Bob

Dear IRIS Colleagues,

The National Research Council of the National Academies is conducting a “decadal” study on Catalyzing Opportunities for Research in the Earth Sciences (CORES) for NSF’s Division of Earth Sciences. The purpose of the CORES study is to: (1) identify a concise set of high-priority scientific questions for the next decade, (2) assess infrastructure needed to address these questions, and (3) determine opportunities for greater collaboration with other NSF divisions and directorate, federal agencies, and domestic and international partners. The CORES website (http://nas-sites.org/dels/studies/cores/) provides more detailed information on the statement of task for the committee, the membership of the committee, and how to subscribe to receive updates from the committee.

The CORES committee strongly feels that this study must be informed by vigorous community input from across the spectrum of the Earth sciences. One way the committee is doing this is via a Community Input Form (https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4717567/CORES-Community-Input). The number of submissions the committee receives from different sub-fields of Earth science may well influence the priority the committee assigns to these different sub-fields. I strongly encourage you to complete this questionnaire and provide your input on the three topics mentioned above.

The 2015 Leesburg workshop report on “Future Geophysical Facilities Required to Address Grand Challenges in the Earth Sciences” (https://www.iris.edu/hq/files/publications/other_workshops/docs/futures_report.pdf) and the white papers submitted to that workshop (https://www.iris.edu/hq/workshops/2015/05/future_seismic_and_geodetic_facility_needs_in_the_geosciences) may provide information you will find useful in completing this questionnaire. Other documents you may find useful include the Seismological Grand Challenge document (https://www.iris.edu/hq/lrsps/) and the final report of the 2016 Subduction Zone Observatory Workshop (https://www.iris.edu/hq/workshops/2016/09/szo_16/).

Please go to the CORES Community Input website to complete the questionaire (https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4717567/CORES-Community-Input). It only takes a few minutes. There is no deadline for submission of the questionnaire, but I strongly encourage you to complete it as soon as possible. If you authored a white paper for the Leesburg workshop, consider submitting it to the CORES committee. You can do this by sending a pdf of the white paper to Deborah Glickson (DGlickson<at>nas.edu <DGlickson<at>nas.edu>) at the National Academies.

This is your opportunity to provide input to this very important study which may strongly influence future NSF-funded research in the Earth sciences. Make your voice heard! Early career scientists are especially encouraged to respond.

Best wishes for the New Year!
