Dear All,

The University of Aberdeen is recruiting! A major campaign has been launched to bring the best and brightest thinkers to Aberdeen, to help solve global research challenges. 60 new academic posts are spread across multiple disciplines, including health, energy, environment, data and AI, and humanities and law.

As part of this recruitment campaign, we are looking to bring four geophysicists to the School of Geosciences (follow the links below for further particulars, application instructions and contact details for informal enquiries):

1. Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Geophysics
https://www.abdn.ac.uk/research/jobs/GEO367A

2. Chair in Industrial Geophysics
https://www.abdn.ac.uk/research/jobs/GEO365A

3. Lecturer in Environmental Seismology
https://www.abdn.ac.uk/research/jobs/GEO366A

4. Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Decommissioning (Geophysics)
https://www.abdn.ac.uk/research/jobs/GEO363A

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CLOSING DATE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS IS THE 12th May 2019.

The School of Geosciences comprises the Departments of Geology & Petroleum Geology, Geography & Environment, and Archaeology. The new position in geophysics will join the Department of Geology & Petroleum Geology, which currently consists of 27 academic members of staff, with a traditional strong research record in tectonics, structural geology, sedimentary geology and petroleum geoscience. Geophysical research techniques are employed across the School (e.g. solid Earth and exploration geophysics as well as near surface geophysics for shallow sub-surface imaging, fluid-flow mapping and environmental monitoring). The School is a well-equipped and successful centre for geophysics research, with a growing PhD student population and research profile. It houses the Aberdeen University Geophysical Equipment Repository (AUGER), an equipment pool comprising 10 Güralp 6TD seismometers, Geode seismic reflection/refraction, Geoscanners multi-antenna GPR, IRIS resistivity tomography, Leica dGPS and Geometrics total field magnetometers, with associated processing/modelling software. The School also has a dedicated seismic analysis and interpretation facility (SeisLab), housing numerous industry-standard software packages and access to the University’s High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster, Maxwell.

The Department of Geology & Petroleum Geology hosts both postgraduate and undergraduate degrees in geophysics. The 12-month MSc. Geophysics programme was launched in September 2014 and focusses on educating students via research-led teaching in the broadest aspects of fundamental geophysics rather than specific application to hydrocarbon exploration. Graduated students have a very high employment rate in: i) the energy industry; ii) near-surface geophysics; iii) digital technology; and iv) continuing their education as PhD researchers. The BSc. Geophysics programme started in 2017 and runs in parallel with the BSc. Geology and Physics programmes until the 3rd year, when it includes dedicated geophysics modules in subsurface digital imaging, signal processing and seismic interpretation. The new appointees in geophysics will contribute to the classroom, fieldwork and research project aspects of teaching geophysics, and assist with its day-to-day operation and future expansion in their areas of expertise, under the guidance of the Programme Directors.
