The USGS Volcano Science Center is hiring an Operational Network Manager
(Geophysicist) to join the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage, AK.
The incumbent will be responsible for managing AVO’s volcano monitoring
network, which currently includes over 225 individual stations, repeater
sites, and telecommunications hubs distributed across a 1700-mile-long
swath of Alaska. The network is composed predominantly of seismic
instruments but also include real-time geodetic, infrasound, camera, and
gas instrumentation.
We welcome applicants with strong backgrounds in the planning, design, and
management of geophysical networks that deliver real-time data that are
used for hazard mitigation and the study of crustal geophysics; development
and implementation of novel techniques for measuring seismic, geodetic, or
other geophysical signals in challenging environmental conditions; and
coordinated studies that are targeted at addressing perplexing problems in
interpreting geophysical phenomena and toward developing quick and accurate
assessments of volcanic activity. Please note that applicants must be U.S.
citizens.

Some of the duties of this position will include:
- Principal responsibility and authority for planning, organizing, and
leading teams to assess requirements, devise strategies, and implement a
large-scale system for volcano monitoring in locations of national and
global importance and impact.
- Develops innovative approaches and system designs to streamline network
installation and maintenance operations for real-time seismic monitoring in
demanding environments.
- Establishes budgetary needs to maintain and operate volcano monitoring
networks over the long-term, while also allowing for unforeseen
contingencies such as major volcanic eruptions or new regulatory mandates.
- Serves as a chief liaison to external agencies on the subject of
volcano-monitoring networks, working in collaboration with them to advance
and expand AVO’s volcano monitoring and research capabilities.
- Responsible for developing and implementing innovative plans to augment
and improve monitoring networks of volcanoes showing signs of unusual
activity, thereby increasing the likelihood of a successful eruption
forecast.
