The Department of Earth Sciences at Dalhousie University is seeking two highly-motivated PhD students in seismology. Tuition, generous stipend, and other fees are funded for both graduate research positions.
One PhD student will work on seismicity monitoring and classification in Baffin Bay. The student will collect and process land and marine (ocean bottom seismometer - OBS) data, and use these data to determine seismic location, magnitude, and focal mechanism, and further discriminate between earthquakes and landslides using machine-learning based methods. Integrated with the results of geological and archeological work, this project will provide assessment and prediction of geohazards from landslides, earthquakes, and tsunamis in the region. Principal supervisor will be Dr. Mladen Nedimović. Preferred start date is September 2019 (no later than May 2020).
One PhD student will work on method development and applications of rapid seismic detection, location, and characterization. The student will develop a comprehensive and seamless workflow to automatically and rapidly detect, locate and characterize earthquakes, and apply to onshore and offshore seismicity monitoring using land seismic data and OBS data. Machine-learning and GPU techniques will be adopted. Principal supervisor will be Dr. Miao Zhang. Preferred start date is September 2019 (no later than September 2020).
Requirements:
- Background in math, physics, and geophysics
- Experience in computer programming (e.g., C and Python)
- Knowledge of signal processing, preferably seismic data analysis
