The ICTP-EAIFR, a Category 2 UNESCO institute affiliated with the University of Rwanda and closely
associated with the ICTP (see http://www.ictp.it/programmes/outreach-activities/eaifr.aspx),

is inviting application for a permanent position in solid-Earth Geophysics.

The institute is newly created with a view to positioning itself as a leading research and teaching institute
in Eastern Africa. The institute will grow to have at least 6 full time researchers and 8 postdoctoral
fellows and a vibrant visiting scientists programme as well hosting a number of meetings every year.

Presently the institute has three scientific staff (including the Director) two in the field of Condensed
matter physics and one in Astrophysics/Cosmology. Potential future areas include space physics,
climate change and mathematics.

OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the supervision of the Director the incumbent will undertake research in physics of the solid
Earth with emphasis on physics of earthquakes and/or physics of volcanoes and will teach in
the Masters programmes and supervise PhD students. Essential responsibilities include:
 Carry out research in the fields of expertise.
 Participate in the organization of the Master and PhD programmes in geophysics.
 Teach at least two courses per annum in the Masters programme.
 Supervise students and postdoctoral fellows at the institute.
 Actively participate in the development and running of a Ph.D. programme in geophysics and
to supervise and/or co-supervise Ph.D. students in their fields of research.
 Help organise workshops, meetings etc. that are held by the Institute alone or in collaboration
with other international bodies, especially the ICTP.
 Interface with research staff of the departments of Physics, mathematics and engineering at
UR and with the ICTP.
 To keep a collegiate atmosphere within the institute and with the Earth System Physics
section at the ICTP.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
 Ph.D. in solid-Earth geophysics or in a related field.
Work Experience:
 At least 4 years of relevant professional experience after obtaining the doctorate. (2 years of
which in an international environment is an asset.)
 Experience in lecturing and organizing training activities. (This experience in a developing
country is an asset).
Skills/Competencies:
 Ability to work in a multicultural environment as part of a team.
Languages:
 Excellent knowledge of English.


BENEFITS AND ENTITLEMENTS

On successfully completing a probationary period of one year this post becomes a permanent
position. The gross annual remuneration depends on the actual post and is based on an expatriate scale.

RAMA medical insurance is provided.
The incumbent automatically have the status of ICTP Associate for 6 years, which allows to visit
the relevant ICTP research group on a yearly base.
