AGU Session S026: Methodological innovations and applications in seismic wave physics: wave scattering, attenuation and amplitude information


The session description is as follows:


Seismic wavefield carries ample information in regards to the medium it propagates through. For example, seismic scattering reveals structural discontinuities and velocity heterogeneity; seismic wave amplitude contains information about the attenuation, as well as spatial variation in the velocity structure; both wave scattering and attenuation are crucial ingredients in wave physics study. In recent decades, we have seen increasingly research topics on studying intrinsic/scattering attenuation, imaging the earth with scattered wave, extracting information from coda wave, and estimating ground motion, site effect or attenuation.


This session invites any theoretical, methodological or observational contributions related to seismic wave scattering, attenuation, and information in waveform amplitude. Studies on other seismic wave phenomenon or related approaches are also welcome. Some examples are: seismic wave conversions, Monte Carlo simulation, effective medium theory or wave-equation-based approaches.
