*Postdoctoral position, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia
University*

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites
applications for two Postdoctoral Research Scientist positions in the
Rock and Ice Mechanics Lab.

One position will focus on volume changes during mineral carbonation,
hydration and/or oxidation, and its effect on stress, fractures, and
permeability (“cracking versus clogging”), with potential applications
to CO2 capture and storage and/or geothermal power generation. The
candidate will run flow-through experiments in a triaxial apparatus,
exploring the chemo-mechanical feedbacks that control reaction rates and
extrapolating experimental results to natural systems. Prior experience
running experiments in a triaxial apparatus is highly desirable, as is
experience with characterization of reaction products in terms of
mineralogy, composition and microstructure.

A second position will focus on experimental ice physics, with
application to glacier flow and moons of the outer solar system. An
ambient pressure cryogenic apparatus will be used to run experiments
that will range from creep and attenuation to fatigue, friction, or
fracture, depending on the project. Experience running experiments and
characterizing deformation microstructures and grain scale processes is
required. Experience dealing with cryogenic cooling systems is a plus.

Candidates should have recently completed or be nearing completion of a
PhD in Geosciences Engineering, Physics or related discipline and
demonstrated competence in running laboratory experiments. Excellent
communication, interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to
use independent judgment required. Evidence of the ability to conduct
and publish high quality research is required.

Proposed start date is December 1st 2019, with some flexibility.
Appointments will be for 1-year, with continuation pending funding and
progress.

Search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and
will continue until the positions are filled.
