Open Until: 2019-11-15

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher who is enthusiastic to work on research related to ambient seismic noise analysis. Depending on the candidate’s background and research interests, various potential projects are available. These include:
- understanding the generation mechanisms of ocean-generated seismic noise, with a focus on the generation of Love waves, either through observational or numerical approaches.
- characterizing ocean wave state using land-based observations of seismic noise, including the
use of analog seismograms from the past century.
- improving the accuracy of ambient noise-based subsurface monitoring methods by taking into account the uneven illumination by noise sources.
- participating in seafloor seismology projects using the ocean bottom seismometers of the University of Hamburg.

The position includes teaching duty of up to 4 hours of teaching per week during semester times. The candidate is expected to participate in academic service at the institute.

The initial fixed term is three years. The contract provides for a maximum extension of up to three years depending on the associate’s achievements during the first stage. Starting date is flexible, and starts at the earliest on 01.03.2020.

Requirements:
The successful candidate must have either completed, or be in the process of completing, a PhD in a relevant subject area such as seismology, acoustics, physics or similar fields.

Good knowledge of English and good written and oral communication skills are essential for presenting results at workshops and international meetings, and preparing papers for submission to international journals. Previous experience in programming is expected, preferably in Python.

Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interest, contact information for two referees, and copies of degree certificate(s). Please send applications as a single pdf file by email to: celine.hadziioannou<at>uni-hamburg.de. The applications deadline is on November 15th, 2019. Evaluation of the applications will begin immediately until the position is filled.
