The Data Science Initiative at Brown University seeks applications for multiple tenure-track assistant professor positions in the area of data science. Successful candidates will have a joint appointment with the Data Science Initiative and a tenure home in any Brown department. At least one of the positions is intended to have a tenure home in the Department of Computer Science, but we encourage application from applicants from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds. The Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Science at Brown in particular encourages applicants who apply innovative data science approaches to understanding the Earth and other planets, including related hazards and societal impacts.

The start date for these positions is July 1, 2020.

Brown's Data Science Initiative https://www.brown.edu/initiatives/data-science/ (DSI) serves as a campus hub for research and education in data science. Engaging partners across campus and beyond, DSI facilitates and conducts both domain-driven and fundamental research in data science, educates the next generation of data scientists, and explores the impact of the data revolution on culture, society, and social justice. The DSI values diversity and inclusion as essential to achieving excellence.

A strong research record and teaching skills are required. We seek candidates who work on the foundations of data science, investigate the societal impact of data science, or have a strong interdisciplinary orientation. We are particularly interested in candidates who work in machine learning (broadly interpreted), data-driven systems modeling, network science, and data visualization, and who can connect with the departments of applied mathematics, biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, or other relevant units at Brown.

To apply for these positions, please submit the relevant materials (cover letter; curriculum vitae; concise research and teaching statements; a statement describing how you will contribute to the development of a diverse and inclusive learning community through teaching, research, and/or service; and three letters of recommendation, with at least one letter addressing the applicant’s teaching abilities). Please identify the Brown department that would be most suitable as your tenure home in your application.

Application materials should be submitted through this site:
