With support from the NSF-funded project on “Modeling of Crater Floor Deformation in Relationship with Lava Lake Activity”, we invite applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in volcano geodetic modeling. The successful candidate will focus on the interpretation and numerical modeling of geodetic InSAR geodetic time-series measurements at two lava-hosting volcanoes in the Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of Congo. The selected postdoctoral scholar will be based at Penn State under the mentoring of the project PI Christelle Wauthier (Associate Professor of Geosciences, cuw25<at>psu.edu). The project will be conducted in close collaboration with an international and multidisciplinary team including Drs. Benoît Smets (Royal Museum for Central Africa, Belgium) and Nicolas d’Oreye (ECGS, Luxembourg).

Candidates must have a PhD in geodesy, numerical modeling, geophysics, or a related field by the time of hire. Candidates should have strong mathematical/numerical skills. The candidate will be highly motivated with a keen interest in volcanic processes, geodetic modeling, and geophysics. Previous experience with geodetic modeling - ideally numerical modeling approaches - data inversions, and a strong desire to learn new computational methods, are highly desirable. Experience in InSAR is a plus but is not essential.

Applications must include: 1) a cover letter outlining the candidate’s academic qualifications and professional experiences, motivation, and how they will bring value to project goals; 2) a current curriculum vitae; and 3) contact information for three references with the application.

Review of applications will begin on August 15, 2020 and continue until the position is filled. A start date on November 2020 is desirable. The position is funded for one year from the date of hire with possibility for renewal, contingent on funding and performance.
