The Department of Geoscience in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Geophysics.

Job Description:
We seek a postdoctoral researcher for a two-year position in seabed geophysics / geoacoustics / seismology, with the potential to be extended for an additional year. The research will develop probabilistic (Bayesian) methods to study seabeds of continental shelves. In particular, we employ reflectivity measurements of the seabed to infer sediment properties such as velocity, density, attenuation, porosity and dispersion.

The data were acquired in large volumes on towed arrays and a particular interest is to study the feasibility of scaling inference methods to 2D and 3D application over large study areas. The information gained is important to understand underwater sound propagation and applications such as SONAR. Particular areas of interest include inverse theory, probabilistic machine learning, Markov chain Monte Carlo, sequential Monte Carlo, computational seismology or acoustics, high performance computing, including message passing and general-purpose graphics cards, and/or numerical methods for seismic wave propagation.

Qualifications:
• PhD or equivalent degree in geophysics, acoustics, statistics, physics, or computer engineering;*
• strong quantitative background in acoustics, seismology, Bayesian inference, machine learning.
• excellent programming/coding skill (relevant languages and technologies are C, Fortran, MPI, CUDA, and python);
• fluent in written and spoken English and have strong communication and technical writing skills.

*To be eligible as a Postdoctoral scholar at the University of Calgary, you must have been awarded a PhD or equivalent degree within five (5) years immediately preceding the appointment. Please review the Postdoc Eligibility Guidelines for more information prior to applying for this position
Application details:
Please email your application as a single PDF file on or before 11:59 MDT Friday, September 4, 2020 to Dr. Jan Dettmer, Associate Professor at jan.dettmer<at>ucalgary.ca

All applications must include:
• a single-page cover letter outlining the candidate’s suitability and motivation for the role;
• single-page statement of research background, including major research accomplishments and interests
• a current curriculum vitae (CV) with list of published articles
• official or unofficial copy of diploma(s)/university certificate(s); and
• contact information (telephone numbers and e-mail addresses) of two (2) references that may support the candidate’s application.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Only those applicants selected for interviews will be contacted. In accordance with Canadian Immigration requirements, priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada, although others are encouraged to apply.
