*Position** Overview*
UNAVCO maintains and operates the Geodetic Facility for the Advancement of
Geoscience (GAGE) which provides support to the NSF investigator community
for geodesy, Earth Sciences research, education and workforce development
with broad societal benefits. As part of GAGE, UNAVCO operates a large
network of geodetic instruments (primarily GNSS) and a world class data
facility and archive. This facility supports a broad range of applications
from the study of plate tectonics and earthquakes to real-time precise
vehicle navigation and fiducial networks.
The Software Engineer III will work with general direction and is expected
to identify and resolve most problems, and to actively participate in
matters of operational impact to UNAVCO. This position is respected as a
subject matter expert and relied upon to initiate and drive relevant
practices that align with UNAVCO’s operating standards and mission. The
incumbent will mentor and review work of members of the data transition
team. Additionally, this position will work with the geosciences community
to coordinate and/or participate in activities and obtain feedback on the
transition to a cloud native architecture.
This position will mentor a small team of developers designing and managing
the transition to a new cloud native architecture. This position will work
closely with current Project Managers and Technical Leads in the design and
solicit the broad data services group for design requirements. Does not
have supervisory responsibility.
*Essential Job Functions*
- Containerization of the databases used to store all the metadata about
our data holdings and networks to support scalability, interoperability,
and reproducibility.
- Containerization and optimization of applications for the extraction,
translation, quality control, and delivery of data holdings.
- Build analysis optimized data stores and analysis ready datasets
(HDF5) of the data holdings for all geodetic data types.
- Guidance of cloud architecture from design to deployment and
maintenance.
- Leads the establishment of and follows internal software development,
testing and documentation methodologies, policies, and best practices to
ensure a robust software development environment is maintained.
- Continually works to acquire and improve skills relevant to the
program.
- Keeps abreast of current best practices and trends affecting a cloud
native architecture.
- May author technical reports and present at conferences.
- Other duties may be assigned as necessary for the successful operation
of the business.
*Required Experience: *
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics,
Geophysics or related field and six years software development experience.
Master’s degree with 2 years of experience in software development highly
desired.
