UNAVCO seeks an experienced *System Administrator *for the maintenance, oper
ation, and planning of enterprise technical systems including, but not limit
ed to, network servers, infrastructure applications, data storage services,
network operating systems, enterprise imaging, data backup and recovery syst
ems, and data access security. The incumbent will work with other system ad
ministrators to migrate current applications into the cloud by participating
in or leading the building of technology roadmaps including architecture, de
sign, and implementation planning needed to move operational environments
and networks into the commercial or private cloud environment.
UNAVCO, is a Boulder, Colorado based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, univ
ersity governed consortium that facilitates geoscience research and ed
ucation using geodesy. UNAVCO maintains and operates the Geodetic Facility for
the Advancement of Geoscience (GAGE) which provides support to the National
Science Foundation (NSF) investigator community for geodesy, Earth Sciences
research, education and workforce development with broad societal benefits.
As part of GAGE, UNAVCO operates a large network of geodetic instruments
(primarily GNSS) and a world class data facility and archive. For over three

The *Systems Administrator *will work with the System Administration, Tec
hnical Lead to set IT priorities and provide reports on staff support and
project status. The incumbent may work with various IT suppliers to stay
current on hardware and procurement tasks. This position will also work with
system administrators from the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismo
logy (IRIS) for colocation support.
The successful candidate must have experience in building and deploying oper
ational environments and networks into commercial cloud environments. They w
ill need network administration experience working with VPNs and building se
cure networks in the cloud, configuring connectivity between local networks
and the cloud environment and keeping internal networks and internal cloud e
nvironments secure from external connections. The successful candidate must
be willing to learn how to deploy and support open source and commercial sof
tware packages within the cloud and local data center. These applications r
ange from service-like applications like Confluence to infrastructure-like
applications like Kubernetes and Docker-Compose. They will work with deve
lopers to set up cloud environments and deploy applications they develop.
*Required Skills*
- Knowledge of containers and development experience in Linux like
operating systems is required.
- Must be knowledgeable or willing to learn tools such as Kubernetes and
Rancher.
- Proficiency using and administering of Mac OS X and Linux operating
systems.
- Proficiency in performing a wide range of tasks, from end user support
to back-end server/network architecture projects.
- Developed decision-making, prioritization and critical thinking skills.
- Competency with a programming language (e.g. C/C++, Java, Perl,
Python).
*Preferred Skills*
- Knowledge of Git along with deployment tools like Terraform and/or
Ansible.
- Knowledge of Openstack, JupyterHub.
- Knowledge of Nagios.
- Experience with various hardware platforms.
- Proficiency using and administering Windows operating systems.
- Experience with Cisco networking equipment and configuration of
firewalls, VPNs, and dynamic routing.
- Ability to generate user documentation in a wiki-based system and use
of source-control repositories.
*Required Experience and Education*
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, with an emphasis on computing systems
administration, or a related field and five (5) years of relevant systems
administration experience, preferably in a scientific/technical
organization.
