We are hiring a Director of Operations to help lead the Alaska Earthquake Center in its mission blending science and public service. We seek an individual with the business and organizational experience to manage a team of two dozen scientists, engineers, and communication professionals. A background in science or engineering is an asset but is not required. We especially seek applicants with diverse (broadly defined) backgrounds that are historically underrepresented in STEM fields. This position is responsible for managing the staff, resources, and operations needed to make the Alaska Earthquake Center run effectively. The role works with the State Seismologist to meet those needs through new initiatives and ongoing funded projects.

The Alaska Earthquake Center is a cooperative environment where projects and operations (including the management of the center) are executed by well-empowered teams. The duties of the Director of Operations include leading the Management Team in the development of procedures and policy, tracking project deliverables, and working with the team to balance resources across the center’s many projects.

The Earthquake Center is a mission-driven organization set within the Geophysical Institute’s Seismology and Geodesy group at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The university offers an attractive work environment and strong benefits. The Earthquake Center’s values emphasize employee flexibility, the open sharing of different perspectives, and a commitment to serving Alaska and Alaskans with strong applied science. Growth and professional development within this position are expected and encouraged.

This role is available as an administrative management staff position or as research faculty. If pursued as faculty, the expectations will include the development of a research program leveraging the resources and expertise of the center. Inquiries about this position, and these options, are encouraged and can be directed to Michael West (mewest<at>alaska.edu).
