Job Description
The Marine Geology and Geophysics Research Group, Subduction Dynamics Research Center (SDR) (Director: Shuichi Kodaira), Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics (IMG), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is soliciting applications for a Researcher (Ⅱ).
The Subduction Dynamics Research Center (SDR), Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics (IMG) conducts marine geological and geophysical research with the aim of improving the current understanding of seismogenic zones, focusing on the source regions of large earthquakes and tsunamis.
We invite applications for a scientist to study marine sediments collected using state-of-the-art research vessels and equipment provided by JAMSTEC. The successful applicant will analyze marine sediment records of earthquake activity using sedimentological, physical, chemical, and chronological approaches.

(1) Number of positions:
1 position for a Researcher (Ⅱ)
(2) Type of contract:
Tenure-track fixed-term employee
(3) Working Hours:
Discretionary labor system
(4) Contract Period:
Period of employment is from December 1, 2021 to March 31, 2026
*Effective date of employment is negotiable. However, it might be changed due to the influence of COVID-19 expansion.
*If appointed on or after April 1, 2022, the contract period will be terminated on March 31, 2027.
*One contract period is a maximum of five fiscal years. The contract period will not be renewed.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after his/her retirement). Salary
Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., JPY 6,000,000~7,000,000
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
